China pins hope on Iran-P5+1 talks

Chinese Assistant Minister of Foreign Affairs Ma Zhaoxu made the remarks on Thursday upon arrival in the Turkish city of Istanbul, where the new round of talks between Iran and the five permanent members of the UN Security Council plus Germany will be held on Saturday, Xinhua reported.

He said China, as a member of the P5+1, played a constructive role in bringing back the two parties to the negotiating table.

The Chinese official added that Beijing expected all sides to respect one another’s concerns and make efforts to create a favorable atmosphere for the talks.

The diplomat also called on all parties to be ‘rational, flexible and pragmatic’ during the talks and to try to achieve positive results by focusing on common ground rather than differences.

Ma said China will maintain an active and constructive attitude toward the new round of talks.

The Iranian negotiating team, headed by Secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council Saeed Jalili, arrived in Istanbul on Friday.

Iran and the P5+1 comprising Britain, China, France, Russia, and the United States plus Germany held two rounds of multifaceted talks in Geneva in December 2010 and in Istanbul in January 2011.

Iran has welcomed talks based on common ground, adding, however, that it has no intention of backing down on any of its inalienable rights.
