Christina Schmid: It’s time to ‘move forward’

“But I achieved what I set out to achieve, and now I want to move forward. I
want to leave that woman in the past and look to the future.”

Despite having a new relationship, Mrs Schmid said that the raw feelings of
loss for her husband remain. She said that meeting Mr Clarke “has not in any
way diminished the strength of my love for my husband”.

“There’s not a day goes by that I don’t miss Oz. But he’s gone and I have been
lucky enough to meet this lovely man who, despite the complications in my
life, cares deeply for me and respects me and wants to be with me – and I
adore him,” she told Hello! magazine.

Staff Sgt Olaf Schmid, 30, who received a posthumous George Cross, was killed
as he dealt with an IED in Helmand on 31 October 2009.

He was hailed by his commanding officer at the time of his death as “the most
courageous man” he had ever met.

He died instantly when the device he was defusing detonated, having previously
detonated 64 roadside bombs in five months.

Following his death Mrs Schmid campaigned for troops to be better equipped and
less over-worked. She also criticized the Ministry of Defence for the low
level of pay and pensions of people in the Armed Forces.

Her campaign was seen as one of the factors behind the Government’s decision
last year to enshrine the military covenant – the nation’s promise that
troops will be cared for in return for the sacrifices they make – in law.

Mrs Schmid said that Mr Clarke gets on well with her friends who also knew her
late husband.

“Mark is a big part of my life. But at the same time, I am a widow and I am
aware that I have to be dignified. I have my closest friends to consider,
many of whom are also Oz’s dearest friends. Whoever comes into my life must
be able to get on with them. Luckily, Mark has,” she said.

Mrs Schmid, who has written about her experiences in a book called Always
By My Side
, believes that her husband would have got on well with Mr
Clarke.

“He’d have gone for a drink with Mark. They share the same sense of humour and
love of sports. Mark is very much Oz’s kind of friend,” she said.

Her son Laird, to whom Mr Schmid was step-father, gets on well with her new
partner, she added.

Mrs Schmid and Mr Clarke are considering holding a blessing ceremony next
month to “formalise their commitments” to each other.

“It symbolises to our friends and families a new start for both of us and how
close we have grown. Until now, we have kept our relationship quiet; only
our closest friends have known. Early on we were both in denial, I think,
about how strongly we felt.

“Neither of us thought we were worthy of the other, so we’d both settle for an
intense friendship. A blessing is a gentle way of acknowledging that
transition,” she said.

Until they met Mr Clarke was unaware of who Mrs Schmid was, according to
