Corporate plan risks environment: Labor

The environment will be put at risk and hundreds of jobs threatened by corporatising Forests NSW, the NSW Opposition says.

Opposition environment spokesman Luke Foley said a state owned corporation at arm’s length from government with an independent board would be far less accountable than Forests NSW currently is.

He was responding to a Fairfax report that Primary Industries Minister Katrina Hodgkinson would announce Forests NSW would be transformed from a state trading enterprise to a state-owned corporation to improve its commercial performance.

He said it put a question mark over hundreds of jobs.

“The corporatisation of Forests NSW will put our environment further at risk,” Mr Foley said in a statement on Tuesday.

“The Land and Environment Court has recently issued a judgment critical of Forests NSW for multiple and reckless breaches of environmental laws,” Mr Foley said.

“Corporatising Forests NSW will remove it from ministerial oversight and only increase the likelihood of non compliance with critical environmental laws.”

He said the plan to corporatise Forests NSW was designed to absolve the government of its responsibility and called on Premier Barry O’Farrell to explain how it would enforce environmental regulations.

“Forests NSW should be subject to more ministerial direction, not less.”
