Cyclone Lua downgraded to category 2

Tropical cyclone Lua has been downgraded to a category 2 system as it continues to track south through the Pilbara.

Lua crossed the coastline at Pardoo at about 3pm (WST) on Saturday as a category 4 system, packing winds of 250km/h and bringing heavy rain to the region.

Isolated properties have suffered damage in Lua’s wake but nobody has been reported hurt.

Late on Friday night Lua was tracking past the small community of Nullagine, which was on red alert with residents sheltering at the police station.

The cyclone was expected to head south for the town of Newman, weakening as it goes but bringing potentially destructive wind gusts.

Cyclone and flood warnings have been issued for large parts of the region, extending into the Gascoyne, Midwest and the northern Goldfields.
