Dangerous Military Buildup as Syrian Army advances and US deploys Fighter Jets

nsnbc : After the recapture of the Kwira airbase in Aleppo, the Syrian Arab Army continues to make progress, supported by Russian air power. Meanwhile, the United States deployed additional fighter jets to Turkey to “protect Turkish airspace” and to join Turkish jets in operations in Syria.

Incirlik_Turkey_US Base_ADThe Russian Air Force carried out 85 sorties, targeting 277 terrorist targets in the Syrian provinces of Aleppo, Damascus, Latakia, Hama, Homs and Idlib within the past 48 hours, reports the Syrian State news agency SANA, Citing a military source, the news agency reports that the sorties resulted in destroying 23 command centers, 17 munitions and weapons depots, 90 fortified sites equipped with firepower and technical equipment, and 147 reinforcement and supply areas for terrorist organizations.

The source added that a munitions depot for Jabhat al-Nusrah terrorist organization was destroyed completely in Idleb countryside, along with vehicles used by ISIS including 3 tanks and two armored vehicles 45km south of Palmyra (Tadmur) city and an underground munitions depot in the surroundings of Maheen in Homs countryside.

In Lattakia’s northern countryside, the airstrikes destroyed a base for Jabhat al-Nusra which contained mortar launchers along with two machinegun-equipped vehicles, while in Damascus Countryside the Russian Air Force destroyed a concentration of vehicles used by ISIS in Beer al-Qasab area.

The airstrikes also destroyed a command center for Jabhat al-Nusra in al-Hader area in Aleppo countryside, killing the terrorist field leaders inside, in addition to destorying mortar launchers used by Jabhat al-Nusra in Kafr Zeta area in Hama countryside.

The source noted that Jabhat al-Nusra has switched from the offensive to the defensive and laid down retreat plans as a result of the Russian airstrikes and of the operations conducted by the Syrian Arab Army on the ground.

A Syrian military spokesman reported on Wednesday that army units, in cooperation with popular defense groups, achieved new progress in the war against terrorist organizations in Lattakia and Aleppo countryside while the army’s air force carried out scores of sorties that destroyed 150 targets in the northern, eastern and central regions, adding that:

“The army has expanded its control to the south of Harasta Road and established control over al-Mahalij area to the south of Marj al-Sultan and its farms in Eastern al-Ghouta after inflicting heavy losses upon terrorists”.

Army units reportedly also destroyed 2 command centers of terrorist organizations in the al-Abasyia and al-Arbae’en neighborhoods in Daraa al-Balad and eliminated members of terrorist groups, who infiltrated from al-Karak and Um Walad village towards al-Aslaha village in the countryside of Daraa and Sweida, according to the Spokesman. The army spokesman added that:

” The army also inflicted heavy losses upon terrorist organizations in Atman, the eastern neighborhood of Busra al-Sham, the west of Harit al-Bajaja, al-Jumruk al-Qadim, Abu al-Nassr Villa, Beir Um al-Daraj, Qtifan Square, the south of Agriculture Bank and in the area surrounding Journalists’ building in Daraa al-Balad.”

The army spokesman affirmed that in the central province of Homs, the army’s operations ended up with destroying dens of Jabhat al-Nusra and ISIS terrorists in Tir Ma’ala, Mahin, Unk al-Hawa, Tadmour – al-Bayarat Road, al-Hilalia Farms, Mahras al-Deik, Howsh al-Zabadi, al-Amiria, Ayn Hussin al-Janobi and al-Shomaria mountains. He pointed out that the army units killed more than 15 terrorists and injured many others who infiltrated from Sneisil towards Jborin town and From Um Sahrij village towards Maksar al-Hissan.

The army units reportedly also killed dozens of terrorists, injured many others and destroyed their fortified sites and positions in concentrated strikes against them in Kafr Zita, Ekirbat, Sarja and al-Sayad.

In Aleppo countryside, the spokesman said, army units, in cooperation with popular defense groups, succeeded in breaching the defenses of the ISIS terrorist organization and broke the blockade on Kawiris Airport after heavy clashes, adding that the achievement is part of a series of successful operations that ended up with establishing control over Tal Na’am, Nou’ima, al-Nasseryeh, Jdeida, al-Jabboul, Tal Sab’in, al-Sheikh Ahmad, Kwairis Shamali and Kwairis Janoubi, al-Jahizia Housing and  the Academy Air Force.

The recapture of the Kwira airport is widely considered as a landmark achievement with regard to returning security to Aleppo province. The airport was captured by insurgents in 2013, with eyewitnesses reporting the presence of Turkish special forces among the insurgents.

The spokesman continued to say that the army reestablished control over al-Makhala and tightened its grip upon terrorist groups in al-hadir village, noting that army units, aided by the popular defense groups, continued their operations after establishing control over more than 250 Km² in the southwest countryside of Aleppo.

The spokesman added that army units are advance in the northern countryside of Lattakia province, establishing control over hills and important points at Camp al-Alman, Ketf Hassoun, and Ketf Dibeh. Securing the airport would be another landmark achievement with regard to Syrian air superiority in the fight against insurgents. The Syrian Arab Army’s Air Force reportedly carried out 75 sorties, destroying some 150 targets in Syria’s northern, eastern and central regions.

The army spokesman reported that 3 ISIS’ sites in al-Jabria, Dikwana and South and east of Kawiris and more than 15 vehicles were destroyed in addition to their sites in Tal Faouri and Tal Ahmar in Aleppo countryside, a number of fortified sites belonging to Jabhat al-Nusra in Mourk, Lahyia, Kafr Nboda, al-Habit, al-Latamina and Atshan in Hama, 20 armored vehicles of ISIS in the area surrounding Mahin and to the east of Bayaarat-Tadmour in Homs countryside.

US deploys military jets to Turkey.

Meanwhile, the United States has deployed additional military jets to NATO member Turkey to “secure Turkish airspace”. The progress of the Syrian Arab Army and its air force due to the recapture of the Kweira airfield not far from the Turkish border, as well as the presence of Russian. Turkish and US military jets in the region increases the risk for unwanted, or also for provocative “incidents”.

The fist 6 of 12 U.S. Air Force F-15C Eagle fighter jets have arrived at the Incirlik Air Base in Turkey on November 6. The jets have reportedly been tasked with conducting combat air patrols on the request of the Turkish government to secure Turkish air space. Pentagon Press Secretary Peter Cook commented that the Turkish request had come “on the heels of incursions we saw by Russians… and it’s a request we’ve honored”.  Cook added that the deployment reflects “both our commitment to ensure the safety of our NATO ally and our commitment to defeat /the Islamic State a.k.a. ISIS, ISIL or Daesh) in Iraq and Syria.

The United States will also deploy F-15E Strike Eagle jets to Incirlik. These jets shall reportedly act as part of the US-led coalition against ISIS. Cook commented that the exact number yet has to be determined. The Pentagon Press Secretary added that:

“We commend Turkey’s decision to open these [airspaces] to us and other coalition members participating in air operations against ISIL and Turkey’s participation in coalition counter-ISIL air operations.”

The U.S. presence in Turkey includes U.S. personnel recovery assets and manned and remotely piloted aircraft already conducting counter-ISIL missions from Incirlik, Cook said. The F-15E’s will, according to Cook join Turkish F-16s at Incirlik which regularly participate in operations in Syria. Cook also noted that the United States continues its dialog with Turkey to evaluate options for the most effective means of “countering ISIL, including along Turkey’s borders. The United States has recently approved the deployment of special forces to Syria, although both Turkish, British and U.S. special forces are known for having operated in Syria since at least as 2012.
