Taxis in Darwin have gone on an unscheduled strike over the number of attacks on drivers.

Northern Territory police say the protest stranded hundreds of city revellers overnight, but did not created a spike in disturbances.

Acting senior sergeant David Wilson says the protest was sparked by an assault in the city, about midnight last night.

“They were escorted by police and that went off without any dramas and about 1:00am they returned their vehicles to the two depots and went home and refused to pick up any fares,” he said.

“I believe the drivers are sick of the treatment they are getting – assaults and that sort of thing.”
