Denver shooting raises fresh questions about US gun laws

The only check required is that gun dealers must keep up-to-date records of
their gun sales, including the name, address and occupation of the person to
whom they sell the weapon and request a background check on anyone buying a
gun.

Under 18s, convicted felons, and anyone convicted of for misdemeanor domestic
violence crimes cannot buy or possess guns. As in Britain, children may use
guns under adult supervision.

According to the Brady Campaign’s annual state-by-state rankings, Colorado
scored just 15 out of 100 possible points on all aspects of its gun controls.

The state won credit for closing the loophole which had exempted gun shows
from carrying out background checks, and also passing laws giving college
campuses and employers the right not to allow firearms in their grounds and
car parks.

On all other fronts, including banning large capacity magazines, mandating
child locks, banning assault weapons, limiting and regulation ammunition
sales, the state scored ‘zero’ points.

Gun control remains a highly contentious issue in the United States.

President Barack Obama, who in 2008 pledged to reinstate a lapsed ban on
assault weapons, has been largely silent on the issue during his
administration which is now facing a tough re-election battle in states
where attempts to curb gun rights would be politically disastrous.

In 2011, following the shooting of Arizona Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords,
the President spoke of “the beginning of a new discussion” on guns in
America, but despite complaints from the Left of his party, has done nothing
to tighten sale and ownership rules.

Despite like of action, pro-gun groups say fear Mr Obama could move in a
second term to curb their constitutional “right to keep and bear arms”, with
nearly three quarters of National Rifle Association (NRA) members
considering him “anti-gun” according to a 2010 poll.
