The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFAT) has for the first time appointed an Indigenous Australian as the head of an overseas mission.
Foreign Minister Bob Carr has appointed Damien Miller as the next ambassador to Denmark.
Mr Miller, a career officer with DFAT, is expected to take up his appointment in May 2013, replacing James Choi.
He recently served as counsellor and deputy head of mission at the Australian Embassy in Germany.
He has previously served in the Australian High Commission in Malaysia.
In addition to his role in Denmark, Mr Miller will have non-resident accreditation to Norway and Iceland.
