Government saves $54 million on air travel

New figures show the Federal Government’s air travel expenses fell 22 per cent for the final six months of last year, compared to the same period the previous year.

That amounts to a saving of $54 million and brings the total amount spent between June and December last year to $193 million.

Finance Minister Penny Wong says the savings have been made by booking domestic travel further in advance, selecting less flexible fares and making bookings online.

The volume of air travel also decreased as agencies made greater use of teleconferencing.

Last year the Government introduced restrictions on business-class travel on short-haul domestic flights.

“Whilst we know it is important that public servants travel to engage with Australians across the nation, we do need to take an approach to travel that more closely reflects the fiscal imperatives and embraces the [teleconferencing] technology now available,” Senator Wong said at the time.
