SAMMIE the staffie suffered horrific injuries when she was doused with petrol and set alight four years ago.

The canine lost most of her ears and half her coat in a blaze that burned 40 per cent of her body and now needs special care to get through each day.

But her delicate state didn’t put off Audrey McNulty who adopted Sammie from the RSPCA on Monday. Mrs McNulty went to the Lonsdale shelter after her son told her of Sammie’s search for a new owner.

“My son and his girlfriend had been in looking at dogs, but because they were renting a property, they didn’t end up getting one,” she said.

“They told me about Sammie and some of the long-term injuries she had and it really touched me, I just wanted to give her a home.”

Mrs McNulty, of Hallett Cove, said she believed Sammie had been at the southern suburbs shelter for about two weeks, but the RSPCA declined to comment.

She said Sammie has open wounds that need constant attention and the six-year-old pooch also needs to wear sunscreen.

Mrs McNulty also adopted another staffie, a three-year-old named Tikko, on the same day she took Sammie home.

“When I got to the shelter there was another dog that Sammie seemed to be quite friendly with, so I took him home too,” she said.
