A policeman shot at a driver whose car had just hit another officer in Newcastle last night, New South Wales Police say.

Two police patrols stopped a car at Wallsend at 10:00pm (AEST) and tried to arrest the male driver for outstanding warrants relating to drug and driving offences.

They allege the man drove his car at a senior constable, who rolled onto the bonnet, but was not seriously injured.

It is alleged the man then drove towards another officer who drew his gun and fired at the car.

It is understood the shot grazed the driver’s thigh.

Police then began pursuing the car down the F3 Freeway, but after 10 kilometres called the chase off due to safety concerns.

The car was eventually stopped on the Central Coast at Mardi.

Police arrested the driver, a man aged in his 30s, who is expected to be charged with a range of offences.

Police have launched an investigation into the incident.
