The Union Jack is to be displayed on driving licences under Government plans to ‘reinforce a sense of Britishness’.

Currently, plastic photocard UK licences bear the European Union flag but no British national symbol.

But Downing Street and the Department for Transport say they will use the introduction of new licences in three years’ time to change the design to include the British flag and possibly also the Royal coat of arms.

The licences, which will contain a microchip to store drivers’ details such as their address, are expected to be issued in 2015.

The change would affect all photocard licences, which must be renewed every ten years, while pre-1998 paper licences without the EU flag will be unaffected.

Ministers will consult on whether different symbols or flags could be included for Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.

In 1996, the then Conservative government planned to put the Union Jack and Royal coat of arms on the new photocard driving licences being introduced as a result of an EU directive.

The directive required the EU flag to be displayed on licences but also permitted national symbols. But the Labour government reversed this decision and the new licences, first issued in 1998, had no flag or coat of arms.

An updated version of the directive, issued in 2006, again permitted national symbols but ministers decided against doing so.

Britain and other EU governments instead approved a new design for a standard European driving licence.

The plastic photocard, bearing the EU flag of 12 gold stars on a blue background with the initials of the issuing country inside, replaced the 110 different plastic and paper permits in use across the EU.

A Downing Street spokesman said: ‘There’s no reason why the British driving licence should have the EU flag but not the Union Flag.

‘People in this country are proud of our national symbols. It’s time that once again we allowed those national symbols on British driving licences.’

Transport Minister Mike Penning said: ‘When plastic licences first came in, Labour decided not to include a national flag.

‘Now they are due to be redesigned we are committed to including our national symbols, because this is a government flying the flag for Britain in every way we can.’

David Cameron said: ‘I think people do find the endless – as Douglas Hurd put it – European interfering in the nooks and crannies of daily life infuriating.

‘They know that our flag is the Union Jack, not the EU flag.’

Great Idea. But first, let us ditch that maroon monstrosity and revert to the British blue passport. We are citizens of the United Kingdom, not Brussels.

Well that should greatly help Britain’s growth prospects……………………..

So as an American u are not proud of the stars and stripes? Are we not allowed to be proud of our flag too?

and so? I guess the DVLA has grouped up with the Government and hired a family friend consultancy, paid thousands to have this result. How does this really mean more British when everyone in the UK that can drive will be issued one? god I hate the country.

Steady on! That could be called patriotic and will upset the

The Union flag becomes the Union Jack only when it’s flown from the mast of a ship.

Well thats a suprise considering they have done everything to follow the ruling from there Masters in brussels to eradicate

Hopefully they’ll print it the right way up ……… although the wrong way up might be appropriate – it’s a distress signal!

Make sure it´s put on the right way up!
There´s a lot of very ignorant Brits out there. They know F-all about Britain´s history etc.
Just saying.

Because the design of the flag will change once the Jocks try to go it alone.
