‘Early to say talks atmosphere positive’

Sources close to the Iranian negotiators told Press TV that it is too early to describe the talks as positive and the viewpoints of all sides need to be heard before passing any judgment.

Michael Mann, a spokesman for EU foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton, had earlier described the atmosphere of the new round of talks as “positive” saying, “there is a positive atmosphere. … There is a desire for substantive progress.”

The first round of the new comprehensive talks began in Istanbul on Saturday after a hiatus of 15 months. The second round of the negotiations will be held in the Iraqi capital of Baghdad, the date of which will be announced at the end of the Istanbul meeting.

The Iranian delegation present at the talks is headed by Secretary of the Supreme National Security Council (SNSC) Saeed Jalili while the delegations of the six world powers are headed by EU foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton.

This is the second time that Istanbul hosts talks between Iran and the P5+1.

Tehran and the P5+1 held two rounds of talks in the past, one in Geneva in December 2010 and another in Istanbul in January 2011.

Iran has welcomed the talks based on common ground and has repeatedly made it clear that it has no intention of negotiating over or backing down on any of its inalienable rights.
