Easter Show wraps up for another year

The best produce, freshest seafood and finest wines were on display at this year’s Sydney Royal Easter Show.

But it was the pies, dagwood dogs and lemonade that won the crowds over.

Stunning autumn weather and the allure of rides, showbags and carnival fun drew around 810,000 people to the annual event, which wraps up on Wednesday.

The agricultural exhibits proved a real hit, giving city slickers the chance to learn about Australian farm life and the origins of food on our shelves.

But when it came to a snack, the fresh organic options were superceded by old-time show favourites.

A whopping 44,500 pies, 32,000 cobs of corn and 210,000 dagwood dogs were consumed over the 14 days of the show.

Fairy floss proved a winner, with 300,000 sticks sold while 7000 litres of fresh lemonade kept showgoers hydrated.

Other sweet things snapped up by the crowds were 10,000 waffles and a whopping 40,000 scones baked fresh by the Country Women’s Association.

Those without a sweet tooth guzzled 300,000 oysters, 50,000 prawns and 40,000 toasted cheese sandwiches.

The most popular of the 1.7 million showbags sold this year was the Junior MasterChef variety.

Royal Agricultural Society of NSW (RAS) Chief Executive Michael Kenny said it was great to see the crowds flocking to the show’s district exhibits to get a taste of the country.

“City people were given the opportunity to learn about Australian agriculture, the hard work of our farmers and where our food and fibre comes from,” he said in a statement.

About 30,000 pieces of fruit and vegetables from NSW were meticulously judged, nearly 1500 litres of fresh milk squeezed from cows and 5000 eggs laid in the poultry exhibit.

Thirteen piglets became the youngest at the show after being born in the stalls.

The Royal Easter Show offers the richest agricultural prize in Australia, with more than $750,000 in cash prizes and 15,000 trophies awarded.
