Dumped Qld minister may seek legal advice

Former Queensland police minister David Gibson may seek legal advice on the suspension of his driver’s licence, which led to his demotion.

Mr Gibson on Monday night advised Premier Campbell Newman he was allegedly caught speeding on February 16 while his licence was suspended for an unpaid speeding fine.

The Gympie MP says he was unaware the State Penalties and Enforcement Registry (SPER) had suspended his licence.

Mr Newman says he accepted Mr Gibson’s resignation when he couldn’t give an acceptable explanation for the situation.

Mr Gibson’s Facebook page has received scores of messages of support, with many saying SPER is flawed, because mail advising of licence suspension can go missing.

Mr Gibson on Wednesday indicated he could seek legal advice on SPER.

He Tweeted: “Thnx to all for kind words advice. Lots of ppl saying I should get legal opinion on SPER. Any suggestions on a good #Qld law firm?”

Traffic law specialist Andrew Wiseman has told AAP legal challenges only have a 50/50 chance of succeeding.

Police Commissioner Bob Atkinson on Tuesday said police would interview Mr Gibson as they investigate his unlicensed driving.

He had discussed the unpaid speeding fine with the former minister on April 5, two days after he was sworn in.

But Mr Atkinson says he was also unaware SPER had already suspended the licence.

Mr Newman has indicated he may consider changes to the SPER system.
