nsnbc : Egypt received the second of four German type 209/1400 submarines reported Egypt’s military, thus completing half of the contract signed in December 2011.
The type 209/1400 are built in the German city of Kiel. The submarine was manufactured by the German ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems. The official handover was attended by official representatives from both Egypt and Germany.
The type 209/1400 delivered to Egypt has according to the Egyptian navy a range of 11,000 nautical miles and a top speed of 21.5 knots. It is armed with torpedoes and missiles as well as sophisticated navigation and communications systems.
The German type 209/1400 is also said to have sophisticated intelligence capabilities allowing it to monitor large areas of interest. No detailed information about what exact monitoring capabilities the subs Egypt receives were released. Egypt received the first of the four submarines in December 2015.
Egypt is equipping its navy with submarines in order to protect its coastlines and consequently the national security. The volatility of the situation in northern Africa, northeastern Africa as well as the Arabian peninsula pose increased risks and challenges for the Egyptian navy.
The conflict in Yemen and southern Saudi Arabia could according to Egyptian military analysts pose a severe threat to Egypt’s national security if Iranian-backed Houthi militants in Yemen should become capable of threatening shipping in the Bab Al-Mandib Strait. The Strait is the southern entrance to the Suez Canal. A conflict there could due to the geopolitical, strategic and economic importance easily spark an international war. The type 209/1400 submarines also enable Egypt to help combat human trafficking.
