Egyptians rally against ex-Mubarak PM

Thousands of protesters held rallies in cities across Egypt on Friday to voice opposition to the idea of having a remnant of the former regime as their first post-revolution president, the Associated Press reported.

Shafiq served as the prime minister during the last days of the country’s former dictator, Hosni Mubarak, before he was toppled by a popular revolt in February 2011.

In the largest gathering on Friday, at least 7,000 people demonstrated in the Mediterranean port city of Alexandria. Many carried Egyptian flags while others were holding their shoes in the air in a show of protest against the Mubarak ally.

Smaller rallies demanding Shafiq’s disqualification were held in the capital Cairo, Port Said, Suez, North Sinai as well as other provinces.

The demos come as the Egyptians are scheduled to go to the polls on June 16-17 in a run-off election that will see Shafiq and the Muslim Brotherhood’s candidate, Mohamed Morsi, running for president.

Morsi garnered more than 24 percent of the votes cast in the first round of the presidential election in May with Shafiq following in the second place with more than 23 percent.

The Mubarak-era premier is facing the risk of being banned from the run-off if the parliament approves a bill that bars ex-regime members from holding political office.

The “Political Disenfranchisement Law” is being examined by the country’s Supreme Constitutional Court, with a verdict expected on June12.

If Shafiq is disqualified, Morsi will face former lawmaker, Hamdeen Sabahi, who came third in the first round.
