THE heartbroken family of a nine-year-old boy run over and killed by a bikie have told of the moment they learned something was wrong.

Hayden Tingey was walking with his older brother Ryan, 10, along Virginia St in Springvale when tragedy struck about 5.30pm yesterday.

The accident happened just around the corner from the family home and about 200m from the Rebels bikie clubhouse.

The boys’ father Jeff Tingey today told how Ryan – who has Asperger’s syndrome – ran home to alert the family.

“Ryan came home, told us something bad had happened and I ran out the street, (mother) Robyn followed and he was on the ground over there,” Mr Tingey said.

“(The bikie) was there when I got there. I can’t remember (if he said anything). He just had blood on his face.”

He said the family did not blame anyone.

“Hayden was like a big brother, not a little brother. He always looked after Ryan,” Mr Tingey said.

“Nothing will bring him back. No one deserves this.

“It’s an accident unless proven otherwise. We think it’s a terrible accident. Slow down, especially in built up areas. It’s not worth children’s lives.”

Mum Robyn Tingey urged motorists to take care so others didn’t have to experience pain like her family was going through.

“It says 50 for a reason. It’s the most obvious reason to slow down,” she said.

“He was the most selfless, happy child. In his under six little athletics presentation he got the sportsman’s award because he just thinks of other people before himself. It’s gut wrenching.”

Mrs Tingey said Hayden also loved playing tennis and computer game skylanders.

Members from the local Arise and Shine fellowship church walked to the scene of the accident this morning and presented the Tingey family with hugs and flowers.

Pastor Jeph Filipaina said the congregation was praying for the family and would support them.
