A man and his two children have been rescued after getting into trouble while kayaking on the New South Wales south coast.

Lifesavers and police called for a helicopter about 2:30pm (AEDT) when they heard three kayaks had overturned at the mouth of the Moruya River.

The father, 40, and his eight-year-old daughter and 10-year-old son had been playing in an estuary when they were hit by large waves.

The fierce outgoing current sucked the family, from Wollongong, 400 metres out into heaving seas.

Conditions were deadly because of strong winds that have battered the state’s coast since the weekend, forcing the closure of dozens of beaches and putting lifeguards on high alert.

Rescue helicopter spokesman Steven Leahy says that part of the river was treacherous.

Mr Leahy says his team arrived to find three empty kayaks.

“But there was a man and an eight-year-old girl clinging to one of the upturned kayaks,” he said.

“A recue crew officer has been winched to the water and he’s been able to rescue the young girl.

“She’s extremely distressed, hypothermic and tired so she’s been flown to a nearby park and handed to local lifesavers.”

Lifeguards rescued her father using an inflatable rib-style boat.

The 10-year-old boy was missing but was later found suffering hypothermia and shock on the northern bank of the river.

Mr Leahy says the fact the family were all wearing life jackets probably saved their lives.

“Conditions in the area were treacherous. They’re suffering dangerous surf conditions like the rest of the NSW coast,” he said.

“Where they were playing was reasonably safe, but once they were in that outgoing current… it was treacherous.”

All three were treated at the scene by ambulance paramedics and were taken to a local hospital.
