girl, 5, dies after horror crash



A FIVE-year-old Melbourne girl has died after a horror Boxing Day crash.


The girl, from Melton, died yesterday morning in northern NSW after fighting for her life in hospital.

She was thrown from a Holden Barina when it crashed into a tree on the Pacific Highway at Broadwater, near Ballina.

Her brother, 8, and the female driver, 49, suffered minor injuries.

A NSW Police spokesman said the driver was related to the children.

Police believe she lost control of the car before hitting the tree.

“Why the vehicle left the road in the first place, we don’t know,” the spokeswoman said.

The national holiday road toll is 21, with 10 people dying on Christmas Day.

Among them was a motorcyclist, 66, who hit a kangaroo on the Newell Highway near Moree in northern NSW.

Police confirmed a girl, 17, killed on Christmas Day while visiting family in the Whitsundays was from Werribee.

The girl was a pillion passenger on a motorbike when it crashed. The 23-year-old rider was in a stable condition.

The accident happened in scrubland and the rider had to direct paramedics to the scene by mobile phone.

The Christmas holiday road toll in Victoria last night stood at three.
