NSW irrigators will benefit from almost half a billion dollars from the Commonwealth to improve piping and water saving measures along the Murray-Darling Basin.

Water Minister Tony Burke said the $469 million in funding would support four major projects as part of plans to return 80 billion litres of water a year to the river system.

“A resilient river system in the Murray-Darling Basin is important for communities, sustainable food production and the environment,” he said in a statement.

The $469 million comes from an existing $5 billion commonwealth pool to upgrade water infrastructure across the basin.

The latest funding announcement includes $137 million to replace inefficient water replenishment schemes; $83 million to improve irrigation in the Macquarie, Namoi, Gwydir and Border Rivers valleys; $199 million to upgrade rural water metres across NSW; and $50 million to implement a floodwater harvesting program.

The projects were proposed for NSW under a Council of Australian Governments agreement.

NSW Primary Industries Minister Katrina Hodgkinson said that while the state government had reservations about the commonwealth’s draft Murray-Darling Basin plan to return water, she welcomed the funding announcement.

“We’ve been having discussions with the commonwealth for a long time about these particular projects,” she told ABC Radio on Sunday.

“I have been putting some very heavy requests in to the commonwealth for this funding to be forthcoming and it’s good to at least have the first $500 million to get on with the job.”
