Fire threatens diesel tank near Townsville

FIREFIGHTERS are working to protect a 60,000-litre tank of diesel fuel as they battle a blaze near a large freight company in north Queensland.

Fire crews are also tackling two other fires at Stuart, south of Townsville.

Three crews were called to Zinc Road near a zinc metal refinery about 10am (AEST) today, the Department of Community Safety says.

Firefighters are protecting a large freight company depot that houses a 60,000L diesel tank and LPG tanks.

A shipping container has been burnt out and 30 staff have been evacuated from the site.

Another four crews are fighting a grass fire, which started at about 12.30pm (AEST) on Hunter Street.

Crews are also responding to a grass fire on Stuart Drive at Roseneath.

The blazes are causing a major smoke hazard on the Bruce Highway and motorists are being asked to take care.
