A neglected bull terrier was so flea-ridden he bit off the end of his own tail in desperation after a month of suffering excruciating itching, a court heard.

Vets said two-year-old Sambuca had been scratching and biting himself for weeks, before the RSPCA found him covered in open, weeping sores and a wound in place of the tip of his tail.

Owner Shelley Blackwell, 29, was found guilty of causing unnecessary suffering to Sambuca at Milton Keynes Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday. As well as a £1,000 fine and 120 hours community service, she has been forced to hand over Sambuca to the RSPCA and banned from keeping animals for three years.

RSPCA officers were shocked when they inspected Mrs Blackwell’s home in Milton Keynes, Buckinghamshier in April 2011 and found Sambuca wounded and in distress.

Vets said he had been scratching and biting the skin for a month and had sores five days old when he was assessed.

They said he was so desperate he chewed the hard skin off his tail out of relief to leave a bloody, open wound.

Ms Blackwell said she had treated her dog with off-the-shelf flea products from a pet shop but these had not worked.

RSPCA Inspector Sue Haywood said after the case: ‘Vets’ investigations said it would have taken a month to have got to the state the end of the tail was in.

‘There was signs of trauma from the five day old sores that has led to the dog biting off the end.

‘For the sake of spending £20 or £30 on proper flea treatment from the vets, all this could have been avoided.

‘You can see if a product is or is not working and we would advise pet owners take a vet’s advice if unsure.

‘This should be a warning to everybody who has dogs or cats.

‘We were satisfied with the sentence she received.’

The RSPCA is now looking for a new home for Sambuca.

Bless him, these horrid people who let their pets suffer would soon visit the doctors or hospital if they were in such distress themselves, so letting their pet suffer like that shows a complete lack of love and respect for that animal. Poor little sweetheart, I hope he finds a happier and more loving home.

Poor mite 🙁

this is a very sad case when flee treatment must be given every month to dogs- is it lack of education or funds? I don’t know but if you do not have either you should not own a dog!

Which dog in the pictures is sambucca?

Awwww poor dog, some people really shouldn’t be allowed to have animals! I’m glad that he has ben taken off her, I pray he finds a new owner that will love him enough to look after his welfare. This woman should have been banned for keeping dogs for life, heartless person taht she clearly is!

Vile woman should have been banned for life from keeping any animal, hope karma get you where the sun don’t shine! That poor dog, he must have been in agony, just hope he gets the love and care he deserves when he’s found a new home.

people like this need locked up horrible to leave a poor animal like that she could of went to an rspca vet and got flea treatment cheap enough! Poor liitle staffy will probly never get re-homed with the dog shelters being as full as they are!! People like this that give the staffy bread a bad name she should be treated the same as she treated the dog!!

Which one is sambuca? nasty vile woman.

this animal (the owner) should be named shamed everywhere id like to se her put in a filthy room for a month with no flushable toilet to see how she likes it. hope she gets a big fine and/so jail time
