Flipboard alternatives for social Android news junkies

Flipboard has been a mainstay on iOS devices for about two years, only now making its way to Android through an exclusive launch on the upcoming Samsung Galaxy S III. While a leaked APK made Flipboard unofficially available for all Android users, there’s no telling how long it will take Flipboard to release the official app for everyone to enjoy. So let’s take a look at some social news alternatives that have already established their presence on Android’s platform.

Flud News

There are plenty of news readers out there, but Flud has a social angle that combines your social networking feeds with the top news stories of the day. It offers a more custom feel to your news reader, incorporating the users you follow within the Flud network, as well as Google Reader, Twitter and Facebook content. You can select topics and categories of interest to you, and access your personalized news reader with the same aesthetic appeal for which Flipboard is famous. Flud supports all types of content, from video to images, audio and text. Discover news in your activity feed, and add, remove or manage feeds directly from your mobile account.

Google Currents

With their own take on Flipboard, Google Currents meshes blogs, RSS feeds and other web content into a single, magazine-like interface for your Android smartphone or tablet. Google Currents brings in top publications such as Forbes, and mixes it with your favorite blogs and feeds to turn your Google Reader subscriptions into a beautiful layout that’s much more evolved than the feed readers of the web 2.0 era. Every edition is available for offline reading, with sharing options to send content across your social network.

Feedly

Also designed with beauty in mind, Flipboard takes all of your Google Reader feeds and presents them in a wonderful interface that pulls out top content and lets you browse by folder, publication or keyword search. The result is a highly personalized feed with a professional look and feel, tailored to your interests. Feedly integrates with Tumblr, Twitter and Facebook. You can save content to Pocket (formerly Read it Later) and Instapaper for later access, and manage your feeds directly from your mobile account.

Taptu – DJ Your News

As the app name suggests, Taptu is a personal take on social news that puts you in control of how the news plays out. Add Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and other web content to your Taptu reader and access everything in a single stream that looks good and works quite well. Taptu is also focused on content discovery, with the ability to create streams based on keywords and related items based on your existing reading behavior. Android users can also enjoy home screen widgets for Lists, Cards and Stacks, with support for Honeycomb and Ice Cream Sandwich devices. Share content back out to your social network, including Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn. You can also update your Facebook status directly from this app, and even send out a tweet.

FlipSocial Beta

Still in beta, FlipSocial has set out a clear path to rival Flipboard, with a similar name and a similar goal of formatting social news into a magazine-like interface. You can browse Facebook, Instagram and RSS feeds, making for a rather image-centric take on top social news trends. Also like Flipboard, you can flip through your feed content page-by-page, as FlipSocial has added a page-turning feature to establish a high-end experience.

ChannelCaster: Social News

ChannelCaster is all about customization, enabling a community for news discovery and sharing. The goal is to help you cut through the clutter that’s become so overwhelming in our social networks, looking to users to curate topics of interest to help you better uncover the content you really care about. Pool feeds from Twitter, RSS, YouTube, Flickr and other web content to customize your news reader. You can also access Facebook and Twitter feeds from the ChannelCaster app. The curated content here is also crowd-sourced, making for a social contribution process that grows daily.
