JUST a year after the floods devastated Theodore, the community has been struck by tragedy again, losing SES volunteer Matthew Stevens in a freak accident on Friday night.

The 28-year-old, who grew up in the close-knit country town, was killed at the Theodore Fire Station when a truck he was working on accidentally reversed over him while responding to a callout at 6.30pm.

“He was a great bloke and a great asset to the community,” said former Theodore councillor Ron Bock yesterday.

“He was one of those quiet achievers; he didn’t make a lot of noise but he did a lot.”

Matt, his wife Jessica and his brother Tim were all volunteers for the Theodore SES organisation, which recently received a highly commended in the 2011 NRMA Insurance Storm Heroes Team Awards in recognition of their work during the floods.

Mr Bock praised Matt for his contribution.

“He put in a terrific effort,” Mr Bock said.

Head of the Theodore SES, Barry Denning, who worked alongside Matt, described him as a “real helper”.

“He was an extremely helpful citizen and a wonderful person to know,” he said yesterday.

Mr Denning said the loss was a tragedy, both for Matt’s family and the community.

The acting Queensland Fire and Rescue Service (QFRS) commissioner Iain MacKenzie visited Theodore on Saturday to meet the firefighters and speak with Matt’s family.

Mr MacKenzie said all officers involved in the incident had been offered counselling support.

The QFRS, Queensland Police Service and Workplace Health and Safety Queensland are investigating the incident.
