NSW teachers flag more industrial action

Striking teachers are considering whether to take further industrial action this school term if the NSW government refuses to listen to them.

About 150 teachers voted in favour of the move on Friday at the Teachers Federation Headquarters Sydney.

Two-hour stop work meetings are being held at more than 130 venues across the state. The outcome of them will be known later in the day.

A number of recommendations will be put to the teachers, including that they “intensify the campaign with further industrial action before the end of term two”.

The teachers want the government to consider a review of its Local Schools Local Decisions policy over fears it will reduce permanent staff numbers and increase class sizes.

“It would be almost impossible to develop a worse policy than this,” NSW Teachers Federation president Maurie Mulheron told teachers via a video message.

“The federation calls on the government to stop acting in haste and in secrecy.”

The NSW Teachers Federation is calling for the government to hold off on introducing the policy until the union, parents and community members have completely reviewed the changes, expected by the fourth term.

They also want a Salaries, Staffing and Security campaign to be mounted at every school across the state.

PC Federation spokeswoman Rachael Sowden said while parents don’t always support such strikes because of its impact on children’s learning, they fully understand the reasons for the action.

“We’d actually be asking for some of the same questions to be answered that they’re looking for,” Ms Sowden told AAP on Friday.

“We would have some concerns around class sizes and we’d like to look at some sort of minimum guarantees (under the proposed Local Schools Local Decisions reform policy).”

The government argues its reforms will give principals control over at least 50 per cent of their staff and 70 per cent of their budget.
