Former Mafia godfather tries to kill himself in jail

His lawyer Rosalba Di Gregorio said: “What I want to know is who gave my
client a plastic bag? Who put that bag in his cell? He is supposed to be in
a maximum-security prison, in the isolation wing under a strict regime which
forbids objects being taken into his cell. “He is under constant
supervision and yet somehow a plastic bag was brought into his cell. Two
medical experts recently said he was not depressed and in a good state of
mind. I find myself asking did they examine someone else then and not my
client or perhaps they need to look at their notes again? He is very ill and
the conditions he is serving his sentence in are not good.”

Provenzano, was nicknamed as “Binnu u tratore” (Bernie the Tractor)
after he mowed down several rivals with a tractor in a hit, had been on the
run for 43 years before he was caught in an isolated farmhouse near Corleone
on the Mafia island stronghold of Sicily, the hill top town made famous by
the Godfather films.

He is said to have carried out 40 murders himself and ordered the deaths of at
least 120 others in a career spanning more than 60 years after he joined the
mob as a teenager eventually becoming the capo di tutti capi (boss of
bosses) in 1993 when the then chief Totto Riina was arrested.

A prison service spokesman in Rome said: “Bernardo Provenzano was found
in his cell by a prison guard with a plastic bag which had been used to
contain medicine. He was assisted by a prison guard who had spotted
suspicious activity in the cell as he carried out a night time spot check.

“The circumstances are being fully investigated but there is some
suggestion that this was all part of an elaborate plot.”
