If Mr Hollande wins the election Sunday, as he is expected to, concerns about
Mr Obama’s backing for Mr Sarkozy could colour Mr Hollande’s first meeting
with Mr Obama two weeks later. The two men have never met.
The French presidential inauguration will take place no later than May 16, and
the French leader is expected to travel to the US two days later for summits
of the Group of Eight and Nato.
Mr Sarkozy is arguably the most US-friendly French president in a
half-century, and worked to improve relations with Washington after his
election in 2007.
