France’s new leader to fight austerity

The new socialist president, whose victory was in part due to his promise to renegotiate Europe’s fiscal pact, met Eurogroup President Jean-Claude Juncker on Thursday in Paris, in a bid to rally eurozone leaders to endorse his push to change the fiscal policy to include growth measures.

Hollande’s pledge to readjust financial policies comes after German Chancellor Angela Merkel warned European governments against relaxing austerity measures, insisting that eurozone could only get rid of its debt crisis by lowering its borrowing levels.

Hollande will travel to Berlin on Tuesday, only hours after his inauguration as French president, to challenge German-imposed way of handling the eurozone crisis, and to urge Merkel to add growth measures to Europe’s fiscal treaty.

Meanwhile, Merkel told Parliament in Berlin that there was no alternative to the deficit cut measures, warning that “growth through debt” would just push Europe deeper in crisis.

France’s Socialist party spokesman, Benoît Hamon, said that “politics of austerity” failed to improve Europe’s economic crisis.

“We want to renegotiate. Angela Merkel is defending her position but she cannot bypass the will of the French people,” he said, adding, “If nothing moves, the treaty will not be submitted for ratification.”

The loss of Nicolas Sarkozy, Merkel’s main eurozone ally, in the French election, and the defeat of pro-austerity parties in the Greek parliamentary elections, has put the fate of restrictive policies aimed at resolving the eurozone debt and deficit crises in jeopardy.

The EU will hold a meeting on economic growth on May 23 in Brussels, following the Group of Eight’s summit of major economies at Camp David, Maryland, on May 18-19.
