Freedom of Expression in Egypt? Political Correctness Gone Awry!

Christof Lehmann (nsnbc) : Dancers charged with debauchery, another dancer charged for endorsing porn. What could possibly come next? Easy. A male activist was charged with insulting women and the TV show that hosted him was suspended. Regardless whether one agrees or disagrees with the one or the other, one thing is certain. That is, that there is something that has gone awry with regard to the freedom of expression.

Taimou El-Sobky - Facebook

Taimou El-Sobky – Facebook

Egyptian Attorney-General Nabil Sadeq ordered the arrest of Taimour el-Sobky, report The Cairo Post and Youm7. El-Sobky is a self-proclaimed male activist who runs “The Diary of a Persecuted Husband” comic that has 1.2 million “likes” on Facebook. Attorney-General Nabil Sadeq ordered the arrest because he publicly expressed his opinion that 30% of Egyptian wives whose husbands work abroad would have an affair if found the opportunity and that all wives whose husbands work abroad chat on them. The prosecution apparently agrees that el-Sobky has “insulted women”.

The statement was made during a broadcast on the CBC channel. The show, called “Momken” hosted by Khairy Ramadan has been suspended for 15 days. Some members of parliament condemned the episode, which Ramadan said was aired two months ago, reports The Cairo Post.

The accused excused his statements and “admitted” that his opinion was based on “anecdotal evidence”, which means comments on social media, phone calls and so forth. Interestingly, the prosecutor has not launched an investigation into the death threats el-Sobky said he received after he made his statement. Moreover, as far as we are aware of at nsnbc, there have not been cases in which women were charged with insulting men. Have a look at some feminist websites and tell me that you cannot find any that are denigrating males, make crude jokes about them, insult men, or discriminate against them. So much to gender equality and equal rights.

What’s the Real Issue?

The issue is not whether or not one agrees with El-Sobky and his statement about cheating females. The issue is not whether or not one like “The Diary of a Persecuted Husband”. At the root of the affair is the problem that Egyptian’s freedom of expression is severely restricted by a justice and court system that lends itself to those who want to have a go at censoring anything that they consider as politically incorrect. Long live Political Correctness, the greatest invention since Gates invented the PC.

Reda El-Fouly During Her Trial - YOUM7/Islam Osama

Reda El-Fouly During Her Trial – YOUM7/Islam Osama

Was this an isolated incident one could laugh the arrest of Taimour el-Sobky and the charges against him off as a nutty and somewhat entertaining episode from a cartoon that is about as bad idiotic Charlie Hebdo. The disturbing fact however, is that this case is very real and absolutely not an isolated incident.

In June 2015 the Agouza Misdemeanors Court sentenced belly dancer Reda el-Fouly to one year prison with hard labor because she danced suggestively in an amateur YouTube music video wearing in a low-cut dress and shaking her breasts at the camera in close-up. In July her sentence was reduced to six month.

In Egypt, this reduction of the artists sentence apparently has to be considered as a victory for the freedom of expression.

Egyptian Comic Actress Entissar - YOUM7

Egyptian Commedian Entissar – YOUM7

In October 2015 Egyptian actress known as Entissar and Heidi Karam and owner of al-Kahera wal Nas channel Tarek Nour were ordered to be investigated for “spreading immorality and debauchery.”

The Nasr City Misdemeanor Court accepted the case against her because she had publicly endorsed watching porn as a socially acceptable thing. In January the case against her under Article 269 of the Penal Code was dropped.

Regardless whether one agrees with El-Sobky, Reda el-Fouly, or Entissar, here’s what’s important. A justice system that prioritizes and enforces Political Correctness rather than the freedom of expression tends to develop into what one could best describe as an institutionalized Lynch mob, the pornography of “popular power” or democracy in its purest and most unadulterated form.
