‘Resilience’: David Cameron denied saying fuel panic might be no bad thing during his call for Government action

David Cameron told shocked Ministers
‘a bit of petrol panic may be no bad thing’ as he set out his
determination to defeat the threatened strike by fuel-tanker drivers.

According
to senior sources, his provocative remark was made at the end of a
Cabinet meeting last Tuesday that was dominated by the dispute.

Mr Cameron told Ministers that he refused to be ‘held to ransom’ by Unite, the union leading the strike call.

Asked
if the Prime Minister had said ‘a bit of petrol panic may be no bad
thing’, a Downing Street spokesman initially said he had ‘no
recollection’ of any such remark, before denying the comment was made.

However, Cabinet sources told The Mail on Sunday Mr Cameron did make the comment.

In
a powerful rallying cry to Ministers, Mr Cameron said it was vital to
build up the nation’s ‘resilience’ to a walkout by tanker drivers.
Measures  included training more Army drivers to replace tanker drivers
and finding other ways of keeping petrol stations open.

It
was after hearing Mr Cameron’s powerful intervention that Cabinet
Office Minister Francis Maude, one of his closest allies who is tasked
with leading the contingency plans, issued his notorious call to the
public to fill jerry cans with petrol as well as topping up their cars.

Within hours, his advice had been overturned after the Fire Brigade raised concerns about health and safety implications.

By Wednesday, the panic anticipated by Mr Cameron and his team became reality as millions of motorists rushed to fill up.

But the Government went into reverse gear yesterday, telling drivers not to fill up their cars.

The
U-turn came after union leaders said there would be no strike before
Easter.

An Acas spokesperson said: ‘We are pleased that Unite have confirmed they are ready to start substantive talks as soon as possible.

‘We are meeting the employers involved in the dispute on Monday to complete our exploratory talks with them. We hope that formal talks involving both Unite and the employers will start as soon as possible after Monday.’

Held to ransom by tanker drivers or mugged by our All-in-in-together government?
I’m pushed to slide a cigarette paper between the two.

The tanker drivers union keeps quoting that tanker driving is the most dangerous job in the world. How many have been killed in their tanker none. All drivers are in danger of being killed on the roads.

The way cameroon is going if he was leader of say france there would be a revolution he is the most none listening pig headed pm we have ever had apart from hes mother margret thatcher she must have had him on the quiet somewhere he follows her in a lot of ways

All strikes should be illegal. No threats allowed. Strikes are an unhelpful and damaging type of bullying. There should be mandatory independent arbitration to resolve industrial disputes which are not settled by internal negotation, with fair outcomes binding on all parties. Change the law to common sense without intimidation by either side.

What very short memories we all have. Remember the last big petrol strike when Blair went walkabout and left it to bully boy John Reid to be his front man. Things don`t change, just the party in government. Blair made of a fist of it then just as DC did last week.
********
I seem to remeber last time that Leader of the Opposition William Hague and his Chancellor-to-be Michael Portillo supported the Hauliers who started the Fuel Blockade. Amazing what Tories will say and do in Opposition to try and get elected!!! Just like Dodgy Dave’s promises in Opposition.

Your house ins will not pay out if you are using your house to store fuel…FACT.

Maggie Thatcher beat the miners by building up stocks of coal at electricity stations.
If motorists keep their tanks topped up, the impact of any tanker drivers’ strike will be lessened and extra tanker drivers will further reduce the impact.
I will keep my tank topped up every week for the foreseeable future, and if other motorists do the same, the country can simply sit out any strike by tanker drivers.
Maggie beat Scargill and the miners. Let us see if the present government have the guts to take on the Socialist Unite union and beat them.

” It will probably cause great inconvenience to the public but more importantly it could turn out to be very good for us” Is this really the sort of government a so called civilised society really wants?

Disgusting comment from an idiot who runs the UK ,I’m guessing he also thinks it good that we are paying through the nose for it ,vile vile man

Now its our turn. All car drivers should boycott B.P garages for the month of April. If that dose not work boycott all Esso stations in May. Just see how fast fuel prices fall . TRY IT.
