Gas explosion kills tradie

UPDATE 12.50pm: BODY RECOVERED, POLICE ISSUE STATEMENT

THE BODY of a man killed in a gas explosion in Darwin has now been taken away on a stretcher.

A large orange tent has been erected across the road from the scene.

Police have issued a statement saying they attended the scene about 6.30am.

Detective Senior Sergeant Tony Henrys said an exclusion zone had been set up as investigations continue.

“It is believed a young male … was attempting to make ready a work van with gas bottles stored in a rear load space,” he said.

“It appears that gas has been ignited, causing an explosion that killed the man, destroyed the vehicle and caused damage to the home.”

He said forensic investigators, the Territory Response Group, Crime Command, fire investigators, emergency services and NT WorkSafe were all at the scene now.

He said roads would be closed for the rest of the day.

It is the second refrigeration gas-cylinder explosion this week after Melbourne refrigerator mechanic Joe Cosentino from was killed in a similar blast on his way to work as reported on December 13.

UPDATE 11.55am: FAMILY NOTIFIED, FRIEND FLIES HOME TO IRELAND

FRIENDS have joined the housemates of a 24-year-old Irish refrigerator mechanic killed when a gas bottle exploded this morning.

A group of about 10 have gathered and it is understood one will board a flight to Ireland tonight.

The blast was so powerful it blew off the roof of the car port and the steel garden fence.

The roof-rack of the van was flung 30m into the next-door neighbours hot-water system by the force of the explosion and has just been removed.

A police chaplain at the scene said the family have now been notified of the tragedy.

The man was popular and he and his housemates were well-known at the local bar, the Parap Tavern.

Melbourne refrigerator mechanic Joe Cosentino from was killed in a similar blast earlier this week prompting calls to look at the safety of the gas bottles.

UPDATE 10.45am: FAMILY NOT YET NOTIFIED, BLAST TREATED AS SUSPICIOUS

THE FAMILY of an Irish tradesman killed when a gas bottle in his work van exploded have not yet been notified of the tragedy.

Authorities have not been able to identify the body.

Officer-in-charge senior sergeant Tony Henrys said the explosion was being treated as suspicious.

“This has been declared a crime scene while fire investigators determine the cause,” he said.

“There was an explosion and a man has lost his life – whether the gas leak was accidental remains to be seen.”

The Corner’s constable will inspect the body once Territory Response Group bomb technicians have secured the unexploded gas bottles on site.

“It will be some hours until (the premises is safe). It is going to be a long day,” he said.

The man’s housemates – who were home at the time the gas cylinder exploded – are being cared for by neighbours.

“Crime scene do not cross” tape has gone up 30m around the house on Hudson Fysh.

The police forensics unit are filming the scene.

Sen-sgt Tony Henrys does not want media present and has asked journalists not to film.

A press conference is to be held at 2pm.

UPDATE 10.30am: HOUSEMATES WITH NEIGHBOURS, CORONER’S CONSTABLE ON SCENE

THE CORONER’S constable has arrived at the scene of the fatal gas explosion.

NT Work Safe has confirmed they are looking into the case.

Members of the NT police tactical unit, the Territory Response Group, have just arrived along with the Coroner’s constable.

Police said they believe one of five gas cylinders exploded when the man started the engine of his work van.

The Irish tradesman’s three housemates are now with neighbours after their house caught fire as a result of the devastating blast.

UPDATE 10:15am: DARWIN IN SHOCK, BOMB SQUAD ON SCENE

SHOCKED Darwin residents have poured out messages of condolence for the young Irish tradesman killed in a gas explosion on Hudson Fysh avenue at 6.30am.

Some residents thought a bomb had gone off when the blast occurred in Parap.

“I was at CDU Oval and heard a loud bang way off in the distance, thought it was army up to sumthing! OMG poor bloke RIP,” wrote Sharon Fairs.

“So young, a week before Christmas,” wrote Rach Robertson. “Condolences to his family.”

Police said Hudson Fysh would remain blocked for most of the day.

Major crime detectives are investigating along with the forensics team and bomb disposal specialists.

Fire scene investigators from NT Fire and Rescue are also onscene, she said.

Police said it was a matter of course when a death occured for major crime detectives to investigate.

NT Police commissioner John McRoberts was also briefly on scene this morning.

UPDATE: BODY TO STAY ON SCENE

THE body of an Irish tradesman killed in a large gas explosion in Darwin will stay on scene until the coroner arrives later today.

Firefighters have stabilised the scene at Hudson Fysh Ave, Parap.

Fire watch commander Shaun Murphy said one of the crew members heard the explosion from the station in Woolner, about 6.40am.

He said they believed the 24-year-old refrigerator mechanic was inside his work van or on the way to the car when the blast happened.

What was once a car is now a pile of steel.

Neighbours reported their windows shattering and fire alarms falling off ceilings when the explosion happened.

“This has been tough for everybody,” Mr Murphy said.

Readers reported hearing the blast as far away as the northern suburbs of Anula and Rapid Creek.

MAN KILLED IN GAS EXPLOSION

A MAN was killed in a gas explosion in Darwin this morning.

The 24-year-old refrigeration mechanic was killed when a gas bottle in his vehicle ignited as he started van in Hudson Fysh avenue, Parap about 6.40am.

It is believed the man was on his way to work.

The blast is thought to have set off other bottles in a large explosion that blew the doors off his vehicle, blew out windows across the street and started a house fire.

The man was killed instantly, his body blown across the Hudson Fysh roundabout.

The exposion was so loud it was reportedly heard as far away as Casuarina.

Resident Drew Marson who lives two doors down from the burning house said it was the worst thing he’d ever seen.

“I saw the guy’s body in a real bad state,” he said.

“The explosion was that loud it woke the neighbourhood.

“The house opposite on the corner had its windows smashed.”

St John Ambulance paramedic Craig Garroway said the house was still burning and there were more gas bottles so people had been evacuated.

Darwin police watch commander Louise Jorgensen said the road has been blocked and police and fire services are in attendence.
