George Zimmerman pictured with bloodied head after Trayvon Martin shooting

While the picture shows a significant amount of blood, and corresponds with
police reports that Zimmerman was injured when officers reached him, the
wound was not serious enough to merit treatment at hospital.

Zimmerman was instead looked at by paramedics at the scene before being
handcuffed and taken to a Sanford police station. Video surveillance of the
28-year-old walking through the station shows no evidence of serious injury.

The picture emerged
on the same day as Zimmerman took the stand for the first time
since
being charged with second degree murder. At a bail hearing in Sanford, he
apologised to the family for the loss of their son.

“I am sorry for the loss of your son. I did not know how old he was. I thought
he was a little bit younger than I am. I did not know if he was armed or
not,” he told Martin’s parents.

The family lawyer later said that Martin’s father, Tracy, wept in anger at
what he called “this self-serving apology”.

Judge Kenneth Lester granted Zimmerman bail on the condition that he post a
$150,000 bond and submit to electronic GPS tracking and a curfew as well as
staying away from alcohol and firearms.

The emergence of the photograph on a crucial day in court shows that
Zimmerman’s arrest and prosecution have done little to stem the flow of
leaks from both sides.

The case, which has reignited a debate about race and profiling in America,
has been played out as much in the media as it has in the court of law.

Stories supporting both Zimmerman’s claims and the allegations by Trayvon’s
parents have been periodically placed in the media.
