German FM phones Iranian, Saudi counterparts

Berlin, Jan 5, IRNA – German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier phoned his Iranian and Saudi counterparts on Tuesday, German Foreign Ministry said.

Steinmeier urged both ministers to do their utmost not to endanger international diplomatic peace efforts in Syria amid the latest tensions between Tehran and Riyadh over the execution of prominent Saudi Shia cleric Sheikh Nimr al-Nimr.

Earlier in the day, Steinmeier called also on Iran and Saudi Arabia to de-escalate in their conflict.

Saudi Arabia and Iran owe it to the international community to put aside their differences in the Middle East and focus on opposing Islamic State (Daesh), Steinmeier said in an interview with Germany’s top-selling newspaper Bild.

Steinmeier urged both countries to show responsibility and focus on calming the region and opposing Daesh.

‘I hope that the turbulence will end soon, reason prevails and Riyadh and Tehran focus on what’s really important – defusing the military conflicts, fostering political solutions in Syria, Yemen and elsewhere and thus pulling the rug out from under ISIS (Daesh),’ Steinmeier said.

‘The whole Middle East, and especially Saudi Arabia and Iran, are somewhat indebted to us. The international community has worked extensively for years to bring peace to the interrelated conflicts in the region.

Now we need responsible actors in the region who act responsibly, in Riyadh as well as in Tehran,’ Germany’s chief diplomat added.
