I’VE lost my shirt, the skin on my knuckles and my dignity. A friend is using my shirt as a tow rope and a couple of strangers have their hands on my backside, pushing up as I try to scramble up a muddy slope.

Slide back and I’m in the bog again, left with a Lego man haircut and ears full of gunk. Next go I’m somehow up, but with three hours of running, crawling and climbing to go and another dozen mud holes to negotiate.

Tough Mudder, a 20-kilometre run with a series of physical challenges woven in, is aptly named. It aims to push participants to their physical and mental limits and people are lining up to give it a shot. Where else can you clamber up a greased half-pipe, scale the monkey bars over a pit of filth or run through a path of live electrical cables? The event has been a big hit in the US and Europe and yesterday made its Australian debut, at Phillip Island. About 15,000 people took part, with another 6000 expected today. It’s a slick, well organised, giant money spinner, as thousands happily parted with $150 to get dirty, get a beer and a T-shirt before hobbling home. The attraction was pushing ourselves as hard as we wanted and the camaraderie. The reality was that for much of the day, it was a slog. And the sheer number of participants resulted in delays at some obstacles. But it was impossible not to be swept along by the adrenalin. Thrill-seeking got the better of some, as several had trouble swimming across a 50-metre lake after a five-metre plunge off a rickety platform. Others lay in agony, brought down by cramp, exhaustion or the odd kick in the face. Many didn’t finish but the pain was worth it. We conquered and we climbed and the mud was glorious. Now to get it out of my skin.
