The tale of the Gibson guitar raid — the one focused on the legendary guitar maker’s alleged importation and use of illegal wood — has taken an odd turn. Now CEO Henry Juszkiewicz is claiming the Feds told him that some of his problems “would go away” if the company used Madagascar labor.

In an interview with Beck radio affiliate KMJ 105.9 in Fresno, California, Juszkiewicz told host Chris Daniel that the government made the point “explicitly:”

CHRIS DANIEL: Mr. Juszkiewicz, did an agent of the US government suggest to you that your problems would go away if you used Madagascar labor instead of American labor?

HENRY JUSZKIEWICZ: They actually wrote that in a pleading.

CHRIS DANIEL: Excuse me?

HENRY JUSKIEWICZ: They actually wrote that in a pleading.

CHRIS DANIEL: That your problems would go away if you used Madagascar labor instead of our labor?

HENRY JUSKIEWICZ: Yes, yeah. They said that explicitly.

I’ll tell you what! This could be a blessing in disguise since Madagascar Rosewood is far superior to East Indian Rosewood in beauty and tone in fact,it’s the closest thing to Brazilian Rosewood that can be found (since it’s no longer legal to import Rosewood from Brazil into the USA anymore),plus Ebony wood from this part of the world is of the highest quality on earth.Madagascar grows some of the most exotic and beautiful tonewoods on earth and using them will only make Gibson’s already great guitar’s even greater.I wouldn’t complain about this one!
- Let me reiterate,as long as the Guitars are still built here,it doesn’t matter that the woods are imported because most of the woods used in high quality stringed instruments have always been imported.Only Ash,North American Maple and American Alder are grown here. Well,Koa is also grown in Hawaii,but everything else is basically imported from countries that they are indigenous to.
