The idea of establishing a non-government banqueting ombudsman has been
proposed by the Jiu San Society, one of China’s eight non-communist
political parties and organisations whose alternative voices receive
prominence once a year at the CPPCC.
A report in the China Daily last year said that some estimates put the total
amount of money spent on overseas trips, official banquets and the cars used
by officials at £85 billion a year, about 30 per cent of total government
spending.
The Chinese State Council has committed itself to cutting the spending in
these three areas.
A campaign launched in 2008 to cut overseas trips led to a 49 percent
reduction in the first year, saving 1.6 billion yuan.
