One of two prison guards being held hostage at Hobart’s Risdon Prison has been released after being held by inmates for more than five hours.

The guards were taken hostage about 10am (AEDT) by two inmates inside a cell in a highly secure maximum-security area for prisoners considered to be a risk to staff.

The prisoners are believed to be using improvised weapons, including a razor blade.

The freed guard was physically unharmed and sent to hospital for assessment.

The chief police negotiator is trying to resolve the situation and members of the Tactical Response Group are at the prison.

Corrective Services director Robert Williams says the guard’s release is a minor breakthrough in negotiations.

Mr Williams says the situation is still serious and the focus now is on the safety of staff and inmates.

He says it is unclear what sparked the siege.

“We don’t have any information on that at this stage,” he told a press conference.

“I don’t want to speculate on something that is yet to be investigated fully.

“The situation is still unfolding, although we have had positive signs with the release of one of the hostages.”

Justice Department spokesman Dale Webster says the prison will remain in lockdown until tomorrow.

“Parts of Risdon Prison complex have been shut down to allow for this operation to go ahead, but parts of the complex will be operating as normal,” he said.

“Some staff would be on normal duty and of course some staff would’ve been diverted to help in this instance.”

Corrective Services says there is no danger to the general public.
