Heavily armed cops block off streets in Werribee

DOZENS of police have descended on a Werribee street amid reports an armed man is holed up inside a house.

A police spokeswoman said police are at the scene at Albatross Avenue in Werribee, after receiving reports of a man with a firearm inside a house just before 8am.

Police are unable to confirm if a firearm is involved or if anyone else is inside the house.

“There is a man in the house. We’re unable to confirm if he’s there on his own,” the spokeswoman said.

The special operations group has been called to the scene.

Witnesses said police have cordoned off the street.

A witness living in Albatross Ave said heavily armed police were “everywhere”.

“I went out to collect the garbage [bins] and the policeman told me that I wasn’t supposed to be out here and to go back inside,” the man told the Herald Sun.

“I have seen a lot of police heavily armed and they have blocked off all the streets, but I have no idea what is going on. They haven’t told us.”

A police spokeswoman said details of the incident were not yet available.

Ambulance Victoria spokesman Paul Bentley said paramedics were called to an assault in Albatross Ave just after 5.30am today.

He said police were on scene but paramedics hadn’t been able to gain access to the house.
