Commuters on London Underground will be able to access free WiFi in time for the Olympics.
However, the service will only be available at 80 of the network’s stations and once the train is in a tunnel, devices will go out of range.
Initially, it will be rolled out at major stations throughout the capital with 80 stops being serviced by the start of the Games.
Another 40 will be added by the end of the year and once the Olympics are over only some Virgin Broadband customers will get it for free.
Connected: Passengers will be able to access high-speed internet from Tube platforms
Passengers will be able to access emails and websites and stream videos while they are stood on platforms or escalators.
They will lose the connection when the train goes through a tunnel, but will automatically reconnect at the next stop.
Stations including King’s Cross, Leicester Square, Oxford Circus and Stratford are due to come online in the next few weeks.
Virgin Media, which is operating the service in conjunction with Transport for London, claims speeds will be ‘comparable’ to the planned ‘4G’ mobile internet service, which will be fast enough to stream high-definition video from sources including the BBC iPlayer.
However, real speeds may be slower, due to the high number of passengers expected to use the service.
The underground connection will be free to all Tube users until the end of the Olympics, when it will become available to some Virgin broadband customers or on a pay-as-you-go basis.
A Virgin spokesman said the company hoped passengers would refrain from accessing inappropriate content while on the Tube.
Rush hour: The service will only be available on platforms, not from inside tunnels

I can read this story as the train rattles along through the tunnels. But then I am in Singapore using the 3G network. The UK will get there one day.

Wow so they will do it free over the olympics but afterwards when it would be usefull to the people who live there they will start charging. Bit like how they suddenly decided to fix the tubes, rail and roads in time for the olympics but stuff the people who live here.

All tube users have been short changed.
You were supposed to get 3G throughout the full tube network even on the trains.
Did Boris boast about this being up and running by the start of the Olympics.
