If you go down to the bush today, you’re sure of a big surprise.

As one visitor to the Okavango Delta in Botswana found out, hippos are not just enormous up close, they’re also among the world’s most dangerous animals.

This incredible footage, shot by a YouTube user calling himself alexg00se, shows the moment a fully-grown bull hippopotamus charged a truck full of horrified tourists, dust flying from its hooves.

As the video shows, it takes just six seconds for the massive beast to run right at the game vehicle, which it promptly headbutts with huge force.

The entire truck shakes under the force of the massive blow, while the film-maker is heard yelling ‘Oh, s***!’

The damage associated with the attack can’t be seen on camera, but the filmmaker describes it on YouTube as ‘piercing a hole in the side of the truck and almost taking a chunk out of my leg!!’

Although they are herbivores, hippos are armed with long, lethal teeth designed for battle.

Come the dry season, when water levels are low and food is scarce, rival males will use their tusks to oust their competitors from the river.

During the day they skulk under thickets and are liable to attack if humans come too close. Even if they don’t, the hippo is an unpredictable beast and may decide to charge for reasons best known to itself.

Happily, this one decided that one pass at the truck was enough, and the end of the film shows it trotting away into the distance.
