THOTH = Aided in the birth of the original five gods of Egypt = Osiris, Isis, Set, Nephthys, and Horus

THOTH = Egyptian god of writing, magic, wisdom, and the moon = One of the most important gods of ancient Egypt born of the seed of Horus from the forehead of Set deities who represented order and chaos respectively.

THOTH = Also the god of equilibrium and balance

THOTH = Presided over the judgment of the dead with Osiris in the Hall of the Truth = Those souls not likely to pass judgment had to call upon Thoth for help. He was known as a just and incorruptible judge.

THOTH = Also he consorted with Seshat, goddess of writing, the keeper of books, and patron goddess of libraries and librarians who was alternately his wife or daughter.

THOTH = First Worshiped in Lower Egypt 6000-3150 BCE and continued to 30 BC making Thoth worship among the longest of the Egyptian gods of any civilization.

THOTH = Name was often taken by the kings of Egypt = Tuthmoses is “Born of Thoth”

THOTH = Depicted as a man with the head of an ibis or a seated baboon often with a lunar disc above his head.  The patron god of scribes who always wrote his name first before they began their daily work.

THOTH = Egyptian name was Djehuty = Meaning “He Who is Like the Ibis”, the sacred bird in ancient Egypt.  Birds were a popular pet and associated with wisdom.

THOTH = Lord of the Khemenu and later the city of Hermopolis, his major cult center. The Greeks associated Thoth with their god Hermes so the Greeks Thoth became Hermes Trimegistus or Thoth “Three Times Great, Great”.

THOTH = Story said he was born “from the lips of Ra” at the beginning of creation and was known as the “god without a mother”. Another story was he was self-created at the beginning of time and, as an IBIS bird that lays the cosmic egg which holds all of creation.

IBIS BIRDS = A group of long-legged wading birds that inhabit wetlands, forests and plains.

THOTH = When Horus and Set are fighting for the right to rule, Thoth is said to have been created from the semen of Horus which was accidentally swallowed by Set during the struggle and Thoth was born from Set’s forehead.

TROTH = Chosen by Ra to fetch his distant daughter Goddess back from a remote desert. Thoth accomplished his task through humility, cunning, and perseverance.

THOTH = Helped drive away the serpent Apophis who sought to destroy the sun god.

THOTH = SUPPOSEDLY created the written word people used to record their history and keep track of their daily lives.  But Osiris or Isis gave words to humanity. Thoth kept track of every day’s events as a record keeper.

THOTH = Was also a baboon with the lunar disc on his head seated above a working scribe at his writing desk.

THOTH = Home in the afterlife, the Mansion of Thoth, provided a safe place for souls to rest and receive magic spells to help them against the demons who would prevent them from reaching paradise. His magic revitalized the soul which brought the dead back to life in the underworld.

THOTH = The priests of Thoth were highly educated scribes and his cult was closely associated with the ruling class and monarchy.

THOTH = Even today is an important spiritual entity among Neo-Pagan communities who worship the god = Better known Egyptian deity like  in popular culture, like King Tutankhamun, Queen Nefertiti, and the goddess Bastet.
