The poster that caused the stir.
After facing criticism from a Jewish organization, a poster displaying a baby sporting a Hitler moustache will remain on display at Montreal’s Just For Laughs Festival after the Jewish community was reassured that its message is not meant to be anti-Semitic.
The B’nai Brith of Canada denounced the offensive image on a poster for the French play “Le Prenom,” saying it was insensitive to the memory of six million Jews who were murdered in the Holocaust.
“Any kind of connection to Hitler is still a open wound for many people,” B’nai Brith spokesman Steven Slimovitch told CBC News.
“Le Prenom,” which in French means “The First Name,” tells the story of a father who observes the reactions he receives from others when he tells them that he would like to name his unborn son Adolf. According to the organizers of Just For Laughs, hatred is condemned in the play and B’nai Brith members were invited to see it.
After viewing “Le Prenom” themselves, Slimovitch and the B’nai Brith confirmed that they no longer see an issue with the show and its poster, reported the Times Colonist of Victoria and Vancouver Island.
