Lots of people are talking about New York’s AdAPT competition to design and build really small apartments; close to a thousand applications have been downloaded. Graham and David at LifeEdited show how some are responding to it: Resource Furniture, they have designed a 300 square foot apartment and taped it onto the floor, and then demonstrate their wonderful folding transformer furniture on it.

While Resource Furniture doesn’t have a lock on transforming furniture, they have the most comprehensive US collection we’ve found. While Murphy Beds are the most common space-savers, Resource offers other important space saving pieces like the Box Table used in the adAPT mock-up; the table converts from a coffee table to 8 person dining table. The Pocket chairs used are only 2″ deep when folded.

There are some nice things going on in this plan; a lot of space has been given to provide a generous kitchen with built-in eating counter, it’s bigger than New York foodie Mark Bittman’s.

Unfortunately, this plan would not work for the competition; it is not compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) requirements, which would eat up a lot of that lovely kitchen and kill the eating counter. But otherwise, it’s a terrific demonstration of what can be done in small spaces. More at LifeEdited.
