‘Illegal P5+1 demands caused deadlock’

“The [P5+1] approach to negotiations must change from confrontation to interaction and basic steps in this regard must be taken by the P5+1 because Iran has…proven its goodwill to the other side [in past negotiations],” Parviz Sorouri said Monday.

The lawmaker, a member of Iran Majlis National Security and Foreign Policy Committee, added that past behavior of the P5+1, the Security Council, and International Atomic Energy Agency toward Iran has been illogical and imposing, Fars News Agency reported.

“Imposing unnecessary sanctions and adopting unilateral and ineffective resolutions [by the Security Council against Iran] has made the Iranian nation extremely distrustful of international communities,” he said.

Referring to the forthcoming negotiations between Iran and the P5+1 in Baghdad, Sorouri said the course of negotiations should be set in such a way that the main goal of talks, which is verification and recognition of Iran’s right to peaceful nuclear energy can be achieved.

“We feel rationality is gradually overcoming the irrational and imposing behavior of the [Western] negotiating side in the new round of talks and both sides must prepare themselves for a win-win game,” he added.

On Saturday, April 14, Iran and P5+1 held the first round of their new talks after a 15-month hiatus in Turkish city of Istanbul during which the Iranian delegations also held bilateral talks with individual members of P5+1, except for the US.

Following negotiations, EU foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton told reporters that negotiations were “constructive and useful.”

“We have agreed that the Non-proliferation Treaty forms a key basis for what must be serious engagement to ensure all the obligations under the treaty are met by Iran while fully respecting Iran’s right for the peaceful use of nuclear energy,” she added.

Tehran and the P5+1 had already held two rounds of negotiations in the past, one in Geneva in December 2010 and another in Istanbul in January 2011.

The next round of new multifaceted talks between Iran and the P5+1 is scheduled to be held in Iraq’s capital, Baghdad, on May 23.
