On Monday, January 11, 2016, in a Baghdad mall, an attack occurred that was reminiscent of the Paris attack several weeks earlier: an ISIS suicide bomber detonated a bomb and ISIS gunmen randomly killed at least 18 and wounded more than 50 innocent civilians. Elsewhere in the city, a car-bomb claimed five lives and wounded 12 others. Iraqi forces killed two and arrested four of the mall attackers.

Later Monday night, sixty miles northeast of Baghdad, in the town of Muqdadiyah, 24 persons were killed and 52 were wounded in multiple suicide attacks.  The attacks took place in a café heavily patronized by government-allied militiamen.

Apparently in response to the Muqdadiyah bombings, Shite militants attacked several Sunni mosques.  Two of the mosques were decimated and an imam killed.

There is a rising concern that the extremist Islamic State group is attacking soft targets out of desperation brought about by a series of significant battlefield setbacks.  Most devastating among these are the losses of Sinjar and Ramadi, resulting from the combined efforts of Iraqi and Kurdish ground forces backed by Coalition airstrikes.

The Associated Press reported that Patrick Martin, an Iraq analyst at the Institute for the Study of War in Washington, D.C., stated: “These attacks are part of a deliberate campaign to undermine the strength of the Iraqi security forces…All [of them] are part of the same campaign by ISIS to essentially force Iraqi security forces to respond and prevent them from conducting forward operations.”
