‘Inept political systems cause protests’

The recent popular movements, which have an Islamic nature, have arisen against the ruling hegemonic and inefficient political systems and their internal and foreign policies, Ali Akbar Velayati said at the 1st International Conference on Women and Islamic Awakening in Tehran on Tuesday.

He added that during the past few centuries Muslims in the Middle East and North Africa have been struggling with many problems due to their power-mongering and inept rulers as well as the interference of global colonialists in their countries, but the regional Islamic awakening has brought about hopes for the people to cope with their challenges.

He went on to say that in the past few decades, new Islamic movements with specific features emerged adding, however, that some extremist movements brought about gaps and divisions in the Muslim world by putting forward radical and aggressive viewpoints.

They (the extremist movements) also prepared the grounds for the presence and intervention of the West in the region and depicted a negative image of Islam and Muslim nations under the pretext of fighting terrorism, Velayati went on to say.

The 1st International Conference on Women and Islamic Awakening opened in Tehran on Tuesday, with the participation of female intellectuals and scholars from around the world.

More than 1500 female researchers and scholars as well as political and social activists from more than 80 countries are taking part in the conference that began Tuesday in the Iranian capital.

Iran’s President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad delivered a speech in the inauguration ceremony of the two-day conference.
