‘Iran has twice summoned KSA envoy’

Qashqavi said on Wednesday that he raised the issue of prisoners in a formal memo to the head of the Saudi mission in Tehran, Fars News Agency reported.

He said Iran’s Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi has discussed the issue in several phone conversations with his Saudi counterpart, Prince Saud al-Faisal.

The deputy foreign minister said diplomatic actions were taken following reports of Iranian prisoners being executed in Saudi Arabia.

A new report by the Tabnak news website on Tuesday said Saudi officials have executed 10 more Iranians following the earlier execution of eight Iranian sailors in mid-April.

Quoting an Iranian prisoner, who is currently jailed in the Dammam prison, the report said a total of 25 Iranians are kept at the jail and some of them have been executed in two stages.

On April 18, Press TV reported that Saudi officials had executed eight Iranian sailors in the city of Dammam without any legal proceedings.

According to the Saudi Al-Tagheer news channel, the executions were carried out on April 15 on the order of the Saudi Interior Ministry.

On April 18, Salehi dismissed reports about the executions, saying the order has been temporarily suspended.

He said he discussed the issue with Saud al-Faisal in a phone conversation and stressed the importance of exercising prudence.

The 25 Iranian sailors were arrested on a fishing boat in the international waters 70 miles off the coast of Saudi Arabia six years ago and held on charges of drug possession.
