Iran not after nukes: Israeli general

During a meeting of the Knesset’s Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee on Tuesday, Gantz criticized the discourse over the Iranian nuclear issue.

He said Tehran has not yet decided whether to develop nuclear weapons, adding, “There has been much chatter on Iran in the public discourse. Chatter full of exaggerations. Operationally, it is impossible to know where they’re aiming, or where they’re planning. Only a very few people know anything, what is possible, and what is impossible. Many people are boasting about their knowledge — but only a few really know anything.”

“There is a big gap between the professional dialogue that should be held in the right forums and the public chatter that is taking place,” he stated.

He warned against escalating tensions, noting that “the possibility for tension to deteriorate into war is possible.”

“That tension is like a virus, it spreads throughout the region and every nation deals with it differently,” Gantz went on to say.

Israel is outraged over increasingly loud calls for an end to aggressive rhetoric against Iran.

Last month, former premier Ehud Olmert and the former head of Israel’s internal spy agency Yuval Diskin denounced Tel Aviv’s war-mongering policies.

The United States, Israel, and some of their allies have repeatedly accused Iran of pursuing military objectives in its nuclear energy program. Washington and Tel Aviv have time and again threatened Tehran with a military strike against its civilian nuclear facilities.

Iran argues that as a signatory to the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) and a member of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), it has the right to develop and acquire nuclear technology meant for peaceful purposes.

The IAEA has conducted numerous inspections of Iran’s nuclear facilities but has never found any evidence indicating that Tehran’s nuclear energy program has been diverted to nuclear weapons production.
