‘Iran package for P5+1 under study’

Speaking to reporters Thursday in Baghdad, Michael Mann said the parties involved in the Baghdad talks discussed a host of issues including the 20-percent enrichment of uranium, which was tabled for the first time.

He also expressed optimism that the Islamic Republic would “respond positively” to an offer by the P5+1– the five permanent members of the UN Security Council plus Germany.

Iran’s Secretary of Supreme National Security Council Saeed Jalili, who led the Iranian delegation to the Baghdad talks, insisted in a Thursday press conference following the negotiations that enrichment of uranium, according to the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT), is an absolute right of all its members.

Jalili also noted Iran’s success in achieving enrichment capability of up to 20 percent, reiterating that the country’s enrichment efforts are entirely peaceful and required for the production of medical isotopes at Tehran’s research reactor.

Iran and the P5+1 group wrapped up their plenary meeting in the Iraqi capital on Thursday evening after a session of negotiations on Wednesday and a second one earlier on Thursday.

On the first day of the negotiations, Iran offered a comprehensive package to the P5+1, as Mann told Press TV that the group’s representatives put forward a set of new proposals to Tehran.

Sources close to the Iranian delegation said Iran maintains that its demands, including the lifting of the sanctions imposed on the Islamic Republic, must be satisfied.

Jalili also noted that the Western governments should earn the trust of the Iranian nation.

For her part, the EU Foreign Policy chief announced that both sides have found common grounds for talks, though significant differences remain.

Ashton further pointed out that the next round of the talks will be held through a step-by-step approach based on reciprocity.

The next round of the talks between the two sides has been scheduled to be held in Moscow on June 18 and 19.
